Methane — an invisible, odorless gas with over 80 times more warming power than carbon dioxide in the near-term — is produced by various sources, the biggest of which are oil, gas, agriculture. Reducing methane has major climate and public health and financial benefits because methane capture and leak prevention can mean larger profits when the gas is used as a fuel for heating or transportation. The United Nations, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and California have all taken aim at reducing methane through protocols and standards. But how is it playing out for operators, monitoring companies, and regulated utilities? How are methane satellites, drone sensors, and facility-based equipment bringing information to investors and financiers? What partnerships are being formed to utilize this unprecedented amount of new data to reduce methane emissions?
